Central home air conditioner service systems consist of two major components: a condensing unit that sits outside your house, and the evaporator coil (often referred to as an A-coil) that sits in the plenum of your furnace or air handler. The refrigerant in the A-coil picks up the heat from your home and moves it to the outdoor condensing unit. The condensing unit fan blows outside air through the condensing coil to remove the heat. The condensing unit houses the three parts replaceable by a DIYer: the contactor, the start/run capacitor(s) and the condenser fan motor. The condensing unit also houses the compressor, but only a pro can replace that. The A-coil has no parts that can be serviced by a DIYer.

Modern air conditioning emerged from advances in chemistry during the 19th century, and the first large-scale electrical air conditioning was invented and used in 1902 by England inventor Willis Carrier. The introduction of residential air conditioning in the 1920s helped enable the great migration to the Sun Belt in the United States.
Was not satisifed with this company. This person came out and took 10 minutes only to tell me that my unit would not last for a year and that I needed to have it replaced! I'm not sure if he was very knowlegable or if he was just plain lazy and do not even try to fix the problem. He just wanted to install a brand new system because he was both and of course, that's much more money for him!
R22 (also known as HCFC-22) has a global warming potential about 1,800 times higher than CO2. It was phased out for use in new equipment by 2010, and is to be completely discontinued by 2020. Although these gasses can be recycled when air conditioning units are disposed of, uncontrolled dumping and leaking can release gas directly into the atmosphere.
Outside of your home is an outdoor unit, which is called a condenser. Inside the condenser is a compressor, a condenser coil, and a large fan. The compressor pumps cool refrigerant to an evaporator coil located either in the air handler or just outside the furnace. The evaporator coil gets really cold so that when the blower or furnace pushes warm air past it, the air is cooled. This cool air is then distributed throughout your home through a series of air ducts. Heat is absorbed by the evaporator coil, which warms the refrigerant moving through the coils. This warm refrigerant is then pumped back outside to the condenser coil, where a giant fan cools it off allowing the warm air to escape. This cycle is repeated until your thermostat detects that your home has reached the temperature you set it to.
In 1995, Germany made CFC refrigerators illegal. DuPont and other companies blocked the refrigerant in the U.S. with the U.S. EPA, disparaging the approach as "that German technology". Nevertheless, in 2004, Greenpeace worked with multinational corporations like Coca-Cola and Unilever, and later Pepsico and others, to create a corporate coalition called Refrigerants Naturally!. Then, four years later, Ben & Jerry's of Unilever and General Electric began to take steps to support production and use in the U.S. In 2011 the EPA decided in favor of the ozone- and climate-safe refrigerant for U.S. manufacture.
Its difficult to describe how good of an experience I had with Cobb heat and AC. Ill put it like this, I have gone two 3 other AC repair companies, they send out their most novice field engineer, they give me a 6000 dollar quote to replace my AC for a property I just purchased, and then they leave. Mr Cobb came out himself, figured out the issue cleaned the condenser coils and told me my unit was only a YEAR OLD!!! He did not try to up-sale me or BS me with a quote to replace the boiler which I have had happen as well as the ac unit. Other AC companies suck, I'm sticking with Cobb. hope that helps
You should have your air conditioning maintenance done at least once a year, in the spring. Doing it in the spring will allow your technician to repair any damage the unit might have acquired during the winter, and make it ready just in time for the arrival of warmer temperatures. One of the easiest maintenance tasks consumers can do themselves is maintaining the filters. Air filters should be inspected and cleaned once a month. Restoring or replacing an aging unit can get expensive. Invest in a new model if your utility bills are rising and you notice uneven air flow and temperatures throughout your property. If one room is cooler than another, consider a total replacement. If the air conditioner is relatively new and still within its age range, it's more cost-effective to get a contractor to repair it.
In very dry climates, evaporative coolers, sometimes referred to as swamp coolers or desert coolers, are popular for improving coolness during hot weather. An evaporative cooler is a device that draws outside air through a wet pad, such as a large sponge soaked with water. The sensible heat of the incoming air, as measured by a dry bulb thermometer, is reduced. The temperature of the incoming air is reduced, but it is also more humid, so the total heat (sensible heat plus latent heat) is unchanged. Some of the sensible heat of the entering air is converted to latent heat by the evaporation of water in the wet cooler pads. If the entering air is dry enough, the results can be quite substantial.

I originally took off one star because of the SNAFU with getting the part ordered. When Alberto called me on the phone he admitted the person had "gotten busy with other things" and apologized. THAT was taking the high road and I was impressed by that. Sadly, for reasons I won't guess at, Alberto has decided to take the low road in his comments and imply that they got the part as quickly as possible. Well, we called at 2:30 so did someone spend six and a half hours finding the part?? That seems very doubtful.
If you believe that the ac not working or you’re getting little or no cold air, check these three things first. Make sure all the registers in the house are wide open. Then be sure the furnace filter is clean. Then go outside and clean off the condenser coils (Photo 2). If several registers were closed or the filter was clogged, the reduced airflow could have caused the evaporator coil to ice up and stop cooling your home. If you’ve changed the filter and opened all the registers and you’re still not getting airflow at the registers, deice the A-coil. Move the thermostat mode switch from “Cooling” to “Off” and move the fan switch from “Auto” to “On.” Let the blower run for at least 30 minutes or until there’s good airflow at the registers. Then turn the AC back on to test it. If it works for the next 12 hours, you’ve solved the problem.
